Others, like MOGL, are interested in building marketplaces to connect brands with student-athletes.

One of them was Joe Schmidt, a linebacker at Notre Dame from 2011-2012. He suggested that Syal talk to his former Mendoza College of Business classmate, Wimbush. In January 2020, the former college quarterback joined MOGL as chief athletic officer.

The NCAA Board of Governors supported proposed rule changes that would allow collegiate athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness.

We’re really on a mission here to put the value that the athletes provide to the community back into their hands,” Syal said, “and provide them a service where they’ll be able to seek out the opportunities to monetize their name, image, and likeness while helping local businesses to build their brands and increase their profitability.”

We sought to find a remedy for this inequity because we recognize the impact that athletics have had on our lives. Specifically, athletics allowed Brandon to compete for and graduate from The University of Notre Dame. He attributes these accomplishments to his experiences and growth through youth sports. To help preserve the accessibility of youth athletics, MOGL will help fund athletic programs in underprivileged communities surrounding the universities. The mission is to increase vitality in the surrounding communities through athletes’ engagement with local businesses.

It is no longer a matter of “if” student-athletes will eventually be able to get compensated for their name, image, and likeness (NIL) – it is a matter of when. Several states have already introduced or passed legislation that will permit student-athletes to be compensated for their name, image, and likeness.

As a starting quarterback at Notre Dame, Brandon Wimbush played the most important position for one of college football’s most storied programs. He set a few school records too: for most rushing yards by a QB in a game (207), most rushing touchdowns by a QB in a season (14, in 2017), and lowest interception percentage for a career (2.1%). Despite that success and profile, Wimbush wasn’t able to profit on his achievements beyond his scholarship.
